Matcha has become more and more popular in recent years. You’ve probably seen it added to everything from lattes to pastries to ice cream. The superfood’s earthy flavor (which is very similar to green tea) complements milk-based foods oh-so well. So we have created a keto, low carb, and vegan version– a coconut milk matcha latte!

Health & Matcha

Since matcha is essentially green tea in powdered form, you’ll reap many of the same benefits of drinking green tea. However, because the whole leaf is consumed, you may benefit even more from the increased level of nutrients in matcha.

You also get a smaller, but effective caffeine boost from matcha compared to what you would with coffee or other stronger teas.

Matcha is cultivated differently than leaves grown for steeped teas. This unique method results in a grassy, almost wheatgrass-like flavor. Adding sugar and milk helps balance out the strong flavor.

Note that since you are technically ingesting the whole leaf as opposed to a steeping tea, you will ingest some carbohydrate content, about 1 net carb per serving.

Variations of Matcha

There are two main variants of matcha available, ceremonial grade matcha and culinary grade.

The main difference is that ceremonial grade tea is designed to be physically whipped up and consumed straight, as per Japanese tradition. Culinary grade matcha doesn’t mean lower quality but rather to distinguish a slightly different taste profile. Highly suitable for mixing in with other foods.

We use  Organic Culinary Grade Matcha from Amazon for our coconut milk matcha latte. People rate this matcha highly and it’s perfect for recipes.

Pro-Tip: If you’re looking for a ready-to-drink matcha for an on-the-go pick-me-up, Moontower Matcha slings a ceremonial grade drink in a can. It’s a convenient, keto-friendy alternative to coffee that contains less caffeine and you don’t have to worry about messes from the powder. Swapping out the milk in our Coconut Milk Matcha Latte

Getting back to our coconut milk matcha latte ingredients, let’s talk about milk. The milk used in lattes normally contributes a good amount of sweetness via milk’s sugar content (around 12g sugar per cup).

To circumvent this sugar pitfall and make the matcha latte healthy, we use Unsweetened Vanilla So Delicious Coconut Milk which has only 1g net carb per cup. This creamy milk does not contain added sugar and works perfectly with our matcha powder. Plus, by swapping out cow’s milk, our matcha tea becomes a vegan keto friendly drink!

Tip: Our other favorite milk to use is Milkadamia’s unsweetened vanilla macadamia nut milk, which also complements the matcha flavor well.

Sweetener

Since our milk substitute is unsweetened, we need to make up for the lack of sweetness using keto-friendly sweeteners. Our preferred sweetener used in our matcha latte is BetterStevia Organic Stevia Powder. This particular brand works well for sweetening drink recipes and doesn’t have the bitter stevia aftertaste.
