UPDATE MARCH 2019:

We recently discovered that Tapioca Fiber is an IMO and is HIGHLY glycemic (closer to sugar and dextrose). We can no longer recommend either of the below Lollipop brands as they are both made from Tapioca fiber and not good for a keto or diabetic diet. Please read more about this fiber and it’s recent FDA fallout on our latest post here.

Currently, we haven’t found a keto friendly lollipop that doesn’t use tapioca fiber. We will update when we do.

We are always looking for delicious and new alternatives to our favorite foods. During a  recent search, we stumbled upon sugar free keto lollipops! In this post, we’ll walk you through a couple of great options!

Just like keto friendly gummy bears, most sugar free candy products use maltitol and we aren’t talking just a gram or two where it’s listed at the end of the ingredients list on the nutritional label and you’ll notice little to no effect on your blood sugar or your GI system after eating it.

We’re talking about when maltitol is being listed as the #1 ingredient and is the reason so many keto bloggers tell you to stay away from it because in these cases it might just cause you GI issues.

Maltitol for those who aren’t familiar is a sugar alcohol that is used as a diabetic and keto friendly sweetener, which in small qualities it is. However, in large amounts it can cause GI upset and based on it’s Glycemic Index of 35 (pure sugar is 70) it is lower but not the lowest Low Glycemic sugar alternative on the market. For comparison Erythritol, monk fruit and stevia are all about Zero on the glycemic index scale.

We don’t completely stay away from maltitol because at the end of the day all keto sugar substitutes are processed in some way or form but we are definitely more conscious if it’s in the product and we see where it lands on the nutritional label.

Okay, lets get into keto lollipops…

Our Organic & Vegan Keto Lollipops Top Pick:

Sugar Free Candy – Keto Lollipops by Koochikoo

  • Four awesome flavors:
      • Apple – tastes just like those old school caramel apple suckers (minus the caramel)
      • Blueberry Lemon – Less intense sour warhead flavor (really good!)
      • Blueberry Pomegranate – Reminds us of Acai bowls
      • Orange Pineapple – Tropical fruity taste like a delicious beach beverage
        • Would be great crushed and on a keto drink rim!

INGREDIENTS

  • These are sweetened with Tapioca fiber NO SUGAR ALCOHOLS!
    • They use tapioca insoluble fiber derived from cassava root–that has a mildly sweet taste
    • For FLAVOR they use real fruit
    • For COLOR they use real vegetables
      • Most lollipops would color with artificial coloring like FD&C Red #40? We’ll take the vegetables and fruit!
    • Each sucker comes in at only 1g net carb!! BUT completely SUGAR FREE!
      • For context, the ones your dentist gives you (conflict of interest!?!) has 5g of sugar per pop (it’s all sugar).

Another Option…

We have found one other legitimate keto friendly option.

Zollipops

These are a definite option for keto lollipops however they use Erythritol, Stevia, and Xylitol. Now Erythritol (sugar alcohol) and Stevia are 0-1 on the glycemic index so those are great.

But Xylitol is like maltitol in the sense it’s not zero it actually scores a 12 on the GI scale meaning you can not count it as Zero Carb when subtracting your sugar alcohols from the nutrition label.

What we usually do is count it as a 1/4 net carb per gram so although these lollipops based on the label would be considered 0g net carb per lollipop they’re more like .5-1g net carb per lollipop because they use xylitol and it’s list third on the ingredients list. Matching Koochikoo’s carb count.

So at the end of the day, we would go for Koochikoo because

  1. It’s xylitol free
  2. They’re flavored with real fruits
  3. We have a pet and pets are deadly allergic to Xylitol

BUT we would still eat the zollipops. They are definitely a keto friendly option!
